Selah and Xander’s relationship builds over the book, along with the turbulent times and good and bad inhabitants of James Towne and the burgeoning colony. His wife was the favored daughter of the Powhatan chief, who tragically died (I read glimpses of Pocahontas and John Smith in their back story). Xander (Alexander Renick) is a prosperous tobacco grower who is well respected, both with the colonials and the Naturals (Powhatan nation of Indians). She is tasked to help with the “tobacco brides” that have recently arrived on the shores of the New World. Selah Hopewell is happy helping her father with his cape merchant business and has no desire to marry. This one is set in James Towne in the Virginia colony around 1642 or 1643. It has been a while since I have read a historical book by Laura Frantz and I had forgotten just how much I love her writing and how caught up in the story I get! This one was no different and I blew through it in 3 days (not bad for a 400+ page book for me).
